Hamburg Airport
expansion of aircraft decing fluid storage tank farm
In summer 2011 the Hamburg Airport Authority awarded wolf engineers + consultants with design, specification writing, and site inspection services for the expansion of deicing storage tanks. As consultant with experience in process engineering, piping design, and storage facilities for hazardous materials as well as with our previous projects for aircraft deicig facilities at » Leipzig and » Viennas airports we convinced the Airport Authority from our capabilities.
During the winter season 2009/2010 about 6,500 aircraft deicing activities took place. Only in December 2010 more than 2,000 aircrafts were deiced with about 750,000 liter (200,000 gal) of aircraft deicing fluid used. The existing storage tanks made out of glass-fiber reinforced epoxy with about 120,000 liter (32,000 gal) storage capacity don’t provide sufficient storage reliability required to provide secure deicing service for larger airframes. The vertical glass-fiber tanks are replaced by 11 horizontal fluid tanks made from stainless steel and assembled in 30-foot-ISO tankcontainers.
To comply with German water protection act and to provide a cost-effective design, existing structures and systems at the airport were coordinated and adjusted.
This allowed us to use single wall tank instead of the common double-wall tanks for the same degree of water protection. Additionally to a cost-efficient design, single wall storage tanks offer operational benefits, such as emptying without pumps.
